Cortisol and Heart Palpitations

Cortisol and Heart Palpitations

Recently I saw a patient who had been suffering from consistent heart palpitations for years. She saw many doctors, 2 Cardiologists and had quite a few invasive heart procedures just to find out that there was nothing wrong with her heart. So, she kind of learned how to live with a “flipping out” feeling in her chest. When we reviewed her lab work results, we discovered that her saliva cortisol was consistently elevated throughout the day and the rest of labs were more or less okay. She was put on calming herbs and specific adrenal gland supplements. 2 weeks after the visit I received a very excited email from the patient: for the first time in a few years her heart palpitations went away completely. She even followed up with her cardiologist who, surprisingly, suggested to continue the treatment, she was on.
Just a little success story.

Anti-Aging Medicine

Anti-Aging Medicine

Just read an article on the Internet (where else!), called Selling the Promise of Youth, featuring one of the anti-aging doctors based in California. Obviously, the article was not written by one of his patients! It was not really hateful, but not warm and loving ether. Basically, the author portrayed us, Anti-Aging Physicians, that I’m proud to be myself, as greedy trained professionals, selling poor, unhealthy and desperate patients the “anti-aging and youth forever” dream! Author also mentioned, that the average anti-aging patient takes 20-30 supplements and a few hormones that evil special compounding pharmacies not ran and regulated by FDA, put in bottles and syringes specially for that particular patient, according to the physician estimated doses. The main critique is coming from the fact that we don’t have studies behind all that booming business to prove that it’s safe and it works, like the majority of FDA approved drugs from Physicians Desk Reference book.
Wow, that’s an eye opener! Yes, Anti-Aging Medicine is definitely on a rise. More and more medical professionals and patients become interested in it. And why is that? Could it be, because desperate patients are getting tired of feeling worse and worse every year, and as the result getting more and more prescription medications (FDA approved with well documented and expected side effects for each) and not feeling better? Could it be, because some doctors realize, that you can’t just constantly patch holes and treat the symptoms (by prescribing more and more medications) without trying to find the reason behind them, that could very often be age-related hormonal imbalance?
I know one thing, an overage patient who comes to my not-anti-aging practice is on at least 2 prescription medications by the age of 40, and 3-5 or even more by the age of 50. And the majority of them have not being feeling good for such a long time, that they forgot, what it feels like to be active and lively!
That’s sad.
Here is the fun and inspiring part. There were a lot of comments posted below that article, and of course I did not read all of them, but the majority of them from – are you ready – anti-aging patients, who were saying that they felt better after their hormones were regulated and certain supplements were added and they just were happy to get their life back!

Hair loss

Hair loss

Today I had another patient, complaining of hair loss – what a common problem! If you are a man, that’s kind of “expected”, sadly though. But if you are a woman, that’s a disaster! The problem of loosing hair is much much more complex than just a thyroid insufficiency, as the majority of us first thought it would be. Believe it or not, the hair just does not want to stick around! Your thyroid gets too active or too sluggish, cortisol runs too high or too low, female hormones are not balanced, nutrition is out of wack – and the result is the same: your hair leaves your scalp!

Adrenal Fatigue – continuation

Adrenal Fatigue – continuation

“Life in the fast lane sure makes you lose your mind” – good oldies, wise oldies! We were not designed to live running away from bears constantly, but we do. First, we feel a little tired at the end of the day, then we get more tired and even want to take a nap in the middle of the day, but we still do, what we need to do work/life wise. Eventually, if running from bears/constant stress continues, we just get so exhausted that we literally can’t keep our eyes open, not even talking about work/play! That’s what happens with our poor adrenal glands! They slow down and finally quit on us. Gradually, though – Giving us time to do something about it!
